Cement plant waste burning letter uncovered – Times Union

Ravena Denials by a Ravena cement plant in late 2017 that it intended to burn waste from Connecticut took a hit this week, after a letter emerged that showed it was seeking to do just that. This week, former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regional Administrator Judith Enck released a letter from an affiliate of LafargeHolcim, which owns the Route 9W plant, and a California-based company that was seeking to acquire municipal waste from Hartford, Ct. Enck said the letter raises doubts about the company’s honesty in dealing with Ravena, where town officials are now considering an air pollution law that would bar Lafarge from its goal of burning used tires at the new $300 million plant across from Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School. In the July 19, 2017 correspondence, a regional official of Geocycle, a wholly-owned waste management subsidiary of LafargeHolcim, tells the head of Mustang Renewable Power, which was seeking the Connecticut waste, that Geocycle wanted to purchase 50,000 tons or more of processed waste to be burned as fuel in the kilns at the Ravena plant. The letter “confirms (Geocycle’s) interest in serving as the preferred outlet for the alternative fuel that could be produced by Mustang,” wrote Yulia Kravtsov, regional head of Geocycle for North America and Mexico. “Delivered tonnage may increase substantially depending on fuel characteristics and our plant operating requirements.”
